Meet the ISME Early Career Scientist Committee – Pam Engelberts

Edition 3

Pam Engelberts is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Microbiome Research (CMR) at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia. She is a microbial ecologist interested in spatially characterising syntrophic interactions between microorganisms in environmental and host-associated systems.

Growing up in the Netherlands, she obtained a BSc. in Biology at Leiden University and a MSc in Marine Microbiology at the University of Amsterdam. During her Master’s, Pam moved to Australia where she studied the sponge microbiome at the Australian Centre for Ecogenomics (ACE) and the Australian Institute of Marine Sciences (AIMS). She continued this work as a PhD student at ACE, focusing on characterising microbial communities using numerous culture-independent techniques (e.g. metagenomics, fluorescence in situ hybridisation). After finishing her PhD in 2023, she started her current position as a Postdoc at CMR.

The main research focus of Pam’s Postdoc is on the development of novel fluorescence in situ hybridisation techniques to visualise microbial communities at the strain-level in a wide range of environments.

Pam is passionate about organising community activities and science communication. Since 2023, she has been the Deputy Director of JAMS Brisbane. BrisJAMS is an organisation committed to amplifying the voices of younger scientists (students and ECRs), by giving them a platform to showcase their research findings and recognise their scientific contributions. To help connect ECRs at a global scale, Pam joined the ISME ECSC, believing it is essential to network with international researchers to support and learn from each other throughout your academic career.

In her spare time Pam enjoys going for a run, reading a good book, or going scuba diving. She also loves ice skating, as it reminds her of the Netherlands.
