Committees

The Awards Committee is responsible for the organization of the three ISME awards: The Jim Tiedje Award, the Winogradsky Award and  the Alma Dal Co Award.

Nominations for these awards are solicited from ISME members, after which the Awards Committee selects three finalists per award, and the Executive Board chooses the winner out of the proposed finalists by anonymous vote.

The Awards Committee consists of four members, including the ISME Vice President, who will chair the committee. The Vice President will select the committee members from the ISME membership and/or previous awardees, representing various areas of microbial ecology, geographic regions, career stages, and gender.

The Awards

The Jim Tiedje Award recognizes outstanding lifetime contributions to microbial ecology. Nominees are still active in the field and have been for at least 30 years.

The Winogradsky Award recognizes mid-career scientists who have substantially advanced the field of microbial ecology. The award recognises outstanding contributions to microbial ecology including the development of novel techniques, proposing and advancing ecology theories and establishing new disciplines within the field. Nominees must be active researchers 10-25 years post PhD.

The Alma Dal Co Award recognizes early career microbial ecologists who have made significant contributions to this field. Nominees are no more than 10 years post PhD.

Nomination Committee

A Nominating Committee is appointed by the Board of Directors upon advice of the Executive Committee at least one year before the next General Meeting and consists of four members who are not members of the Board of Directors and who include representatives of different areas of microbial ecology and different countries. The members serve a four-year term with new members appointed every second year. The Vice President presides the Committee. At least two candidates should be proposed for each of the positions as board members. Members of the Nominating Committee shall not serve consecutive terms. The task of the committee is to identify at least 2 candidates per vacancy in the International Board, including the Executive Board, with consideration of geographical spreading, field of expertise and gender so that the Board is well represented in all aspects.
The Local Organizing Committee (LOC), the ISME Office together with the Executive Board of the association are responsible for the leadership in organizing the Symposium. The LOC is, among other things, responsible for securing additional financing. The Executive Board of the Association (President, Treasurer, Vice President and Past-President) represents the Association. The Chair of the LOC represents the entire LOC and reports every month to the Executive Board. The LOC is supported and advised by the ISME Office staff, who are formally members of the LOC. The Symposium program is arranged by the Local Committee in accordance to the program rules and recommendations adopted by the Board and Office. The chair LOC will automatically become a member of the next LOC to pass on the knowledge and experience. Members of the LOC are allowed to be also members of the Board of Directors and vice versa. To find out more on the current LOC, please visit our Symposium page.
