ISME has recognized the growing need to include ECS contributions in evaluating microbial ecology manuscripts, and has therefore established the Early Career Scientist Reviewer Pool to formalize the participation of ECS experts in the peer review process of our society journals.

The ISME Early Career Scientist Committee (ECSC) and ISME Publications have welcomed 102 early career scientists to the inaugural ISME Early Career Scientist Reviewer Pool.

Alongside our editorial board members and ad hoc reviewers, members of the ECS Reviewer Pool will have the opportunity to serve as ECS peer reviewers for manuscripts submitted to The ISME Journal and ISME Communications. Upon assignment to a manuscript, ECS experts will receive peer review guidelines and can consult with the editorial team throughout the evaluation process.

The initiative by the ECSC offers a valuable professional development opportunity for early career scienstists while supporting the high quality standards of microbial ecology publications published in our journals.

ECS Reviewer Pool

The eligibility requirements for the ISME ECS Reviewer Pool are a maximum of 8 years post-PhD experience (excluding career breaks) and demonstrated experience in the field of microbial ecology.

The next call is planned for January 2026. Successful applicants will be added to the ECS Reviewer Pool in our reviewer database.

More information on the 2026 call will be shared on this page and posted on social media closer to the date.
