Meet the ISME Early Career Scientist Committee – Xiaohua Han

Edition 6

Xiaohua Han is an assistant professor at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGGCAS). She is a microbial ecologist focusing on the interactions between microorganisms and minerals, as well as their preservation in both past and present environments.

Xiaohua studied Geology at the China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and earned her PhD in Geobiology from IGGCAS. During her PhD, she also spent two years at the University of Tübingen in Germany, specializing in microbiology. Upon returning to IGGCAS, she continued her work as a postdoctoral fellow and later became an assistant
professor.

Her research aims to unravel the relationship between the geomagnetic field and microorganisms. Xiaohua uses advanced electron microscopy and geochemical techniques to investigate the mineralization processes of iron-metabolizing microorganisms and the biosignatures of magnetic minerals formed by microorganisms in the geological
record.

She is most passionate about making science accessible through workshops, articles, and community projects. Joining the ECSC lets Xiaohua advocate for early-career researchers, promote inclusive collaboration, and bridge science with society. Eager to contribute her energy and experience to support peers and amplify impact.

Off duty, Xiaohua travels and plays badminton—exploring and staying active beyond the lab.
