ISME Early Career Committee Seeks Members

Are you an early-career microbial ecologist who is dedicated to community service and enjoys representing your colleagues? Join ECSC by submitting your application by 10 April 2026.

The ISME Early Career Scientist Committee (ISME ECSC) represents early career scientists of the microbial ecology community. ISME ECSC is dedicated to empowering early-career scientists through inclusive, community-driven initiatives. We organize diverse programs and events that provide support, visibility, and professional development opportunities for our peers. We are committed to fostering a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Using a bottom-up approach, we prioritize listening to early career scientists- amplifying their voices and responding to their needs. Our goal is to create an open and supportive platform where every early-career scientist can thrive, contribute, and feel truly represented.

We are looking for two new members, preferably from the Middle East, Africa, Europe, or Latin America, to ensure continental representation in the committee. The candidates must be eager to actively contribute to ISME ECSC activities, which include, but are not limited to

  • Organization of ECS-targeted events in ISME Conferences and regional meetings.
  • Promoting ECS publications and ECS with alternative career choices in the ISME social media channels.
  • Creating awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the microbial ecology community.
  • Organization of training and education activities to support the professional development of ECS in microbial ecology.

Requirements for new members:

  • PhD conferred within 8 years (excluding any leave, career interruptions, including pre-tenure faculty).
  • One personal statement (300 words max) – brief research background, how much time you can allocate for the committee, what is your history with representing the microbial ecology community and local peers, which committee activities you would like to contribute to, and what are the new ideas/plans you want to bring to the committee.
  • One CV (max 3 pages).
  • Active ISME member, please include the ISME activities you contribute to/attend in your cover letter.

Please send your CV and personal statement to the ISME Office by 10 April 2026. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to an interview in May 2026, and the final decision will be made in August 2026. The new members will join the committee in September 2026.
